Cameron Flowers Continues International Legacy at Texas Southern University

Texas Southern University is in Cameron Flowers’ blood. Raised by a single mother in Nassau, The Bahamas, coming to Tigerland was a natural choice.

“My mother and uncle graduated from Texas Southern University, and former Texas Southern President Dr. John Rudley recruited me in the Bahamas. My mother made me choose the institution she attended and loved.”

A Human Performance & Kinesiology major, he says the best part of his Texas Southern University experience went beyond the classroom.

“It was being an active student leader serving closely with administrators to produce a better TSU. I believe this is what built my interest in pursuing a career in higher education. Also, becoming a member of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity Inc. and thoroughly enjoying the multifaceted and well-rounded experience that the university offers.”

As a student, he took full advantage of every opportunity the university provided.

“My Texas Southern experience gave me leadership and networking skills that I did not have before. TSU taught me the importance of building your professional portfolio inside and outside of the classroom, and that my network equates to my net worth.”

Flowers went on to complete a Master of Education in Education Administration from Texas Southern, as well. He says scholarships made it possible for him to afford and complete both of his degrees.

Today, he serves as Executive Director of Strategic Partnerships and Academic Advocacy in the Office of the Provost at Texas Southern University.

When asked what advice he would give international students considering colleges and why he’d encourage them to come to Texas Southern, Flowers said: “Your college experience is what you make it to be. TSU has professional staff and faculty that are committed to seeing you succeed, and they see you for you and not just another number.”
