Texas Southern University Named Fulbright HBCU Institutional Leader by the U.S. Department of State

Texas Southern University has been named as a Fulbright Historically Black College and University (HBCU) Institutional Leader for 2025. Each year, this initiative recognizes those HBCUs with exceptional engagement with the Fulbright Program, the U.S. government’s flagship international academic exchange program.

Fulbright HBCU Institutional Leaders demonstrate noteworthy support for Fulbright exchange participants and encourage administrators, faculty, and students at HBCUs to engage with Fulbright on campus. The Fulbright HBCU Institutional Leaders initiative highlights HBCU alumni and faculty excellence, as well as HBCUs as a destination for international students and scholars.

Texas Southern University has been recognized as a Fulbright HBCU Institutional Leader in five of the six years since the initiative’s inception in 2019. Texas Southern was also highlighted in 2020, 2021, 2022, and 2023.

“The Fulbright Program has enriched the lives of both our students and faculty by providing access to global learning and research opportunities. These experiences prepare our students to thrive in an interconnected world while allowing our faculty to expand their research collaborations and international networks,” added Provost and Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs, Dr. Carl Goodman.

The Fulbright Program has had a transformative impact on Texas Southern University, enriching the academic and professional journeys of both students and faculty. Through the Fulbright program, Texas Southern scholars have gained opportunities to expand their research, teaching, and cultural understanding on a global scale, bringing those insights back to benefit the university community.

Most recently, Dr. Lucy Ojode, CPA(K), a distinguished professor in the Jesse H. Jones School of Business was awarded a Fulbright U.S. Scholar Program grant. With two decades of service to the university, Dr. Ojode spent the 2024–25 academic year in Rwanda, playing a pivotal role in developing the next generation of Rwandan entrepreneurs who sought an Executive MBA. Her achievement exemplifies how Fulbright extends TSU’s reach worldwide while also affirming the excellence of our faculty. Students, too, have participated in Fulbright opportunities as cultural ambassadors and English Teaching Assistants abroad, returning with experiences that broaden perspectives across our campus and inspire greater global engagement.

The Fulbright Program is the U.S. government’s flagship international educational exchange program. Since its inception in 1946, the Fulbright Program has provided nearly 450,000 talented and accomplished students, scholars, teachers, artists, and professionals, of all backgrounds and in all fields, the opportunity to study, teach, and conduct research abroad. Fulbrighters exchange ideas, build people-to-people connections, and work to address complex global challenges. Fulbright is a program of the U.S. Department of State, with funding provided by the U.S. Government. Participating governments and host institutions, corporations, and foundations around the world also provide direct and indirect support to the Program.
