Texas Southern University Foundation’s 2026 Tiger Ball Raises $3.5 Million for Student Scholarships and Programming
The Texas Southern University (TSU) Foundation announced that it raised more than $3.5 million in gifts and pledges for student scholarships and programming following its annual Tiger Ball, led by TSU Foundation Board Trustee Argentina James. The gala was held Saturday, April 18, at the Hilton Americas in downtown Houston.
Challenge Office Products returned as a major sponsor for the fourth consecutive year. With its ongoing investment, Challenge’s sponsorship of the Tiger Ball will run through 2027, the year Texas Southern celebrates its Centennial.
More than 600 attendees, including Texas Southern leadership, donors, faculty, staff, alumni, elected officials, community leaders, students, and friends—gathered to celebrate Texas Southern’s commitment to academic excellence and student success.
During the program, TSU Foundation Board of Trustees Chairman Dr. Wilson spoke on the impactful legacy of Texas Southern University alumni and the importance of investing in the University’s future.
“The Tiger Ball is our Foundation’s major fundraising effort, but it is also something deeper,” he said. “It is where purpose meets opportunity, generosity becomes possibility, and where we come together to ensure that the next young scholar walking onto our campus will find the support they need to soar. As we prepare to launch into the 100th year of Texas Southern University, we are not just honoring a century of excellence—we are shaping the next century.”
President Crawford highlighted some of the biggest accomplishments of the year, while providing updates on the bold path Texas Southern is charting into its future with the newly-approved strategic plan, Ascend 2030, and campus master plan.
“The Tiger Ball is a powerful demonstration of what makes the Texas Southern University community unique. The unwavering commitment to access, affordability, and student success is an extraordinary testament to how our donors, partners, and friends’ belief in our mission is yielding measurable impact,” President Crawford said. “This night is not only a celebration; it reflects the Tiger Community’s dedication to enabling every Texas Southern University student to actuate their full potential and graduate prepared to compete, win, lead, and thrive. I am humbled by the significant financial investment our donors, partners, and friends continue to make in our students and the University.”
In a surprise announcement, President Crawford shared that the university will be clearing outstanding university financial balances for senior students who are at or near degree completion, further reinforcing Texas Southern’s commitment to student success and timely graduation.
Another key highlight of the evening was the recognition of three Texas Southern University alumni for their continued support of students:
- Gerald Womack: Founding Chief Executive Officer and real Estate Broker of Womack Development & Investment Realtors
- Dr. Harry L. Smith: McDonald’s Owner/Operator, Founder & Owner of Hearthstone Homes, and Founder of The Smith Foundation, Inc.
- Silva Law Group (Juan Silva and Eduardo Sierra): Personal Injury Attorneys, Thurgood Marshall School of Law alumni
During the gala, nearly 300 attendees became Paws Up Donors, responding to the evening plea, resulting in $260,000 of additional fundraising in the reception hall. This included a $100,000 match gift announced that evening.
Attendees were treated to entertainment from violinist Marion DuBose and DJ Cut Creator, who rose to fame as LL Cool J’s original DJ. The world-renowned Ocean of Soul Marching Band, accompanied by the Mystic Krewe of Femme Fatale and dancers from the Zulu Social Aid & Pleasure Club, capped off the evening by leading attendees out of the reception hall in a New Orleans-style second line and along a Road to 100 in celebration of the University’s upcoming Centennial kickoff with the legendary DJ Kid Capri.
Focusing on collaboration, celebration, and commitment to Texas Southern’s next generation of leaders, this year’s Tiger Ball surpassed its fundraising goal and reaffirmed the university’s vision for a bold and innovative future.
