Texas Southern University’s School of Communication Unveils Hollywood-Grade Virtual Production LED Wall to Advance Filmmaking and Digital Media Curriculum

Texas Southern University (TSU) School of Communication announces the landmark installation of a new, state-of-the-art virtual production LED wall. The cutting-edge technology blends real-time computer graphics with traditional filmmaking techniques; this technology acquisition positions the university at the forefront of the entertainment and digital media industries.

The installation of the 24ft x 13ft massive high-definition LED volume wall displays real-time 3D environments behind actors and allows filmmakers to capture complex visual effects directly in-camera, eliminating the need for traditional green screens and reducing the necessity for extensive travel or lengthy post-production timelines.

The installation of this industry-standard technology ensures that Texas Southern students are trained on the exact tools used in major Hollywood productions, game-development pipelines, and corporate broadcasting environments.

“This installation is a monumental step forward in academic innovation and student workforce readiness,” said Provost Dr. Carl B. Goodman. “By embedding virtual production into our curriculum, we are opening the doors for our students to master high-demand, tech-forward skills and giving our graduates a competitive advantage as they step into the future of global media.”

The installation directly supports an ambitious vision to elevate the School of Communication into a premier destination for cinematic education, establishing the school as an epicenter for storytelling along the Gulf Coast and across the nation.

 “Our objective is definitive: build the leading film and digital media school on the Gulf Coast and the number one film program among Historically Black Colleges and Universities,” said Dr. Alan K. Caldwell, Dean of the School of Communication.  “By anchoring our commitment to excellence with this world-class virtual production wall, we are not just keeping pace with industry evolution; we are leading it.”

The new stage will be fully operational starting in the Fall 2026 academic term, with plans to introduce specialized coursework, interdisciplinary media projects, and collaborative opportunities with industry partners throughout the region.
