Texas Southern University Aviation Student Reaches Milestone in Partnership with Southwest Airlines’ Destination 225° Program
Texas Southern University Aviation student, Sydnee Johnson, has been accepted into Southwest Airlines’ prestigious Destination 225° Pilot Pathway Program.
Johnson, a junior from Houston, is the fifth Texas Southern professional pilot student accepted into the program.
“I’m ecstatic about my acceptance into Destination 225°, and I’m extremely grateful for Texas Southern Aviation’s partnership with such a celebrated airline like Southwest. I’m looking forward to continuing to put in the work in the flight deck and to pay back those who poured into me.”
Johnson’s selection marks a significant milestone in the ongoing partnership between the University and Southwest Airlines, which began in 2022 when Texas Southern became the first Historically Black College and University (HBCU) to partner with the airline in its First Officer recruitment program. The groundbreaking agreement established a direct and structured pathway for aviation students from Texas Southern to pursue careers with one of the nation’s leading carriers.
Destination 225°—named for the southwest directional heading on a compass—was developed to guide aspiring pilots toward a career with Southwest Airlines. Through the University Pathway Program, selected students receive mentorship from Southwest pilots and, upon completing degree requirements and accruing the necessary flight hours, have the opportunity to interview for a First Officer position with the airline.
“Being chosen for Destination 225° is no small achievement,” said Dr. Terence Fontaine, Executive Director of Aviation. “This program represents one of the most respected and competitive pathways to the airlines. Sydnee’s selection speaks volumes about her work ethic, flying skill, and character. She has distinguished herself through perseverance and focus, and this milestone reflects the countless hours of dedication she has invested in her training. Her accomplishment demonstrates the strength of our students and the power of this partnership to create real opportunities in the aviation industry.”
The groundbreaking partnership between our program and Southwest aligns with the university’s mission to increase access and representation in STEM-related industries, including aviation.
Johnson now joins a growing legacy of Texas Southern aviation students who are helping redefine what is possible for aspiring pilots. Her achievement not only represents a personal success, but also serves as inspiration for fellow students pursuing professional pilot careers.
“As a second-generation aviator, I was inspired by my father’s journey through both military and commercial aviation,” she said. “Though he never pushed this path on me, traveling has always been a passion of mine. The feeling flying gives me is unmatched. I’m grateful for the opportunity to one day inspire other little girls who look like me to explore flying too.”
Texas Southern University’s Aviation Science & Technology program is recognized for preparing high-potential aviators through rigorous academic instruction and hands-on flight training. Through its continued partnership with Southwest Airlines, the University remains committed to expanding pathways that lead students from the classroom to the flight deck. Currently, Texas Southern University has pathway agreements with Southwest Airlines Destination 225°, United Airlines Aviate, and Republic Airways. We will announce a new pipeline partnership in the coming weeks.
This latest milestone underscores the program’s continued upward trajectory that includes three consecutive years of record enrollment, a top-50 ranking by pilot-colleges.com, and a national feature on MSNow (previously MSNBC), and new fleet of Cirrus SR20 aircraft that has made ours the safest of any college pilot training program in the nation.
