Honors College Freeman Scholars Go Global

This summer students from the Thomas F. Freeman Honors College participated in a transformative, full-spectrum living and learning journey through two of the world’s most vibrant and culturally rich cities—Buenos Aires, Argentina and Paris, France through the Honors College Study Abroad Initiative.  This unique academic and cultural immersion allowed participants to expand their global perspectives, grow in confidence, and develop critical intercultural competencies that extend far beyond the classroom.

In both cities, students live not as tourists, but as guest residents. Through carefully curated homestays or shared apartments, participants are embedded into the daily rhythm of local life. In Buenos Aires, students find themselves in neighborhoods such as Palermo or Recoleta, where cobblestone streets, neighborhood cafes, and community markets offer a true taste of Argentine life. In Paris, accommodations may be nestled in the artistic streets of Montmartre or the historic Latin Quarter, placing students within walking distance of global landmarks and authentic Parisian charm.

A cornerstone of this Freeman Scholar Study Abroad experience is complete cultural immersion. Students are expected to utilize public transportation to navigate both cities, which not only enhances their independence but also deepens their understanding of daily life for local residents. In Buenos Aires, the “Subte” (subway) and colectivos (buses) provide access to everything from tango performances to political demonstrations in Plaza de Mayo. In Paris, students master the iconic Métro system, giving them access to renowned museums, hidden gardens, and bustling open-air markets.

Additionally, language acquisition played a key role in the abroad journey. In Argentina, students take 20+ hours of Spanish language courses and are encouraged to practice with local vendors, host families, and during cultural excursions. Similarly, in Paris, students are immersed in the French language through both formal instruction and daily interactions, enhancing their communication skills and confidence. The language barrier, initially a challenge, quickly becomes a catalyst for personal growth, resilience, and a deeper connection with the host culture.

Additionally, one can’t be abroad and not revel in the culinary experience as an unforgettable element of the program. In Buenos Aires, students explore the rich flavors of Argentinian cuisine, including empanadas and world-renowned steaks, often paired with mate, a traditional herbal tea. Street food and market visits introduce them to the social aspects of mealtime in Argentina. In Paris, food becomes both an art and an experience. From daily visits to boulangeries for fresh croissants to sampling escargot, duck confit, and crème brûlée in neighborhood bistros, students savor the full spectrum of French gastronomy. Food is not just sustenance, but an immersion in history, culture, and tradition.

Scholars participating found the benefits of studying abroad through the Freeman Honors College program to be both numerous and deeply impactful. Students returned with improved language skills, cross-cultural communication abilities, and a heightened sense of global citizenship. Exposure to different educational systems, societal structures, and cultural norms fostered critical thinking, adaptability, and problem-solving skills. Professionally, the experience enhanced their resumes, positioning our Scholars as globally competent and culturally aware leaders prepared for the challenges of a diverse world.

Ultimately, the Freeman Scholar Study Abroad experience in Buenos Aires and Paris wasn’t simply about travel; it was about transformation. By stepping outside of their comfort zones, engaging fully with unfamiliar cultures, and embracing new languages and perspectives, scholars grow into more informed, empathetic, and empowered individuals ready to make a difference on a global scale.
