Hard-fought Fight Between Texas Southern and Lamar

In front of an energized crowd on Faith and Family Night, Texas Southern University hosted Lamar University in a long-awaited rematch on Saturday evening at Shell Energy Stadium. The matchup marked Lamar’s first trip to Houston to face the Tigers since 1980, adding historical weight to an already highly anticipated game.

The Tigers were eager to even the score after last season in Beaumont, where Lamar achieved a 20–17 victory. But what unfolded was a tough night for Texas Southern.

From the opening kickoff, both teams came out with intensity, setting the tone for a physical and competitive game. Texas Southern’s defense showed early grit, but momentum quickly shifted after a blocked punt was returned for a Lamar touchdown just minutes into the game. Still, the Tigers responded — running back Athean Renfro broke free for 77 yards on 10 carries, including a touchdown that tied the game at 7–7.

But from there, Lamar took control. In the second half, Texas Southern’s offense struggled and was held off the scoreboard, while Lamar’s defense and special teams continued to apply pressure. An interception late in the fourth quarter sealed the game, with a final score of 31–7.

After the game, Head Coach Cris Dishman addressed the media with blunt honesty: “So me as the head coach have to take what responsibility — all the responsibility,” Dishman said. “Who’s to blame? Me. Not my coaches, not my players. No one, I’m to blame.”

Now 0-3 to start the season, Dishman made it clear that changes are coming, both in strategy and structure.

Despite the result, the night was a celebration of community and Tiger pride. Home fans showed out in full force for Faith and Family Night, creating a vibrant atmosphere that reflected the spirit of Texas Southern University.

The Tigers now turn their attention to their next game against Mississippi Valley State Delta Devils. The matchup will take place on September 27, at Rice-Totten Stadium in Itta Bena, Mississippi. For Coach Dishman and TSU, this next matchup isn’t just about turning around a season — it’s about regaining identity.
