Two Tigers, One Lasting Legacy: Alumni Couple Invests in School of Pharmacy

This Homecoming, two Texas Southern University graduates are giving their alma mater a gift that will last forever.

Hermie Thomas (COSET ‘95) and Loranda Hellen-Thomas (COPHS ‘97) establish the Legacy Tigers Pharmacy Endowment Fund with a $50,000 gift to the College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences. Texas Southern University will match the gift with $50,000 from the Office of Civil Rights (OCR) Endowed Scholarship Matching Fund, subject to the availability of funds, bringing the endowment to $100,000.

The fund will mainly provide scholarships for students in the COPHS Pre-Pharmacy to PharmD Program. It will help the College recruit and keep strong students and continue building its reputation for excellence. Fund income may also support student success programs, professional development, academic enrichment, recruitment and pipeline efforts, instructional resources, and, when designated, improvements to pharmacy facilities and learning spaces.

“The Legacy Tigers Pharmacy Endowment Fund will provide lasting support for the Joan M. Lafleur College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences by expanding scholarship opportunities, strengthening student success initiatives, and helping us attract and retain talented future pharmacists,” said Dr. Aisha Morris Moultry, Interim Dean of the Joan M. Lafleur College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences. “We are grateful to our alumna, Mrs. Loranda Hellen-Thomas, and Mr. Hermie Thomas for investing in our students and creating a legacy that will benefit generations of pharmacy professionals and the communities they serve.”

To qualify, students must be in good standing with the University, enrolled in the Pre-Pharmacy to PharmD Program, hold a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher, and be Texas residents.

For the Thomases, the gift is a way to make sure the Texas Southern University experience that launched their careers will be there for the next generation of Tigers.
