Texas Southern University’s Ocean of Soul Expands List of Major Artist Collaborations with Lizzo at Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo

Texas Southern University’s world-renowned Ocean of Soul marching band joined multi-platinum recording artist Lizzo on stage for her highly anticipated return to Houston for the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo, delivering an electrifying collaboration.

Nearly 100 members of the Ocean of Soul performed alongside Lizzo throughout the entire set, playing all 11 songs with the band’s signature sound, precision, and high-energy flair. The powerful partnership highlighted the musical excellence and showmanship that have made Texas Southern University’s band program one of the most recognized in the nation.

The performance blended Lizzo’s chart-topping hits with the dynamic brass, percussion, and choreography that have come to define the Ocean of Soul experience, creating a memorable hometown moment for the Grammy Award-winning Houston native and the thousands in attendance.

“This was an incredible opportunity for our students to share the stage with one of Houston’s most beloved artists,” said Brian Simmons, Director of Bands at Texas Southern University. “Performing the full set with Lizzo on a short timeline showcased the professionalism our student musicians demonstrate daily. Between Lizzo, the Beyoncé Bowl, and Kendrick Lamar, our band has worked with some of this generation’s biggest names in music. These are the kinds of moments that make students want to come be a part of the Ocean of Soul.”

Texas Southern University President Vice Admiral James W. Crawford III said the collaboration reflects the university’s commitment to artistic excellence and cultural impact.

“The Ocean of Soul continues to represent Texas Southern University with pride, talent, and professionalism,” Crawford said. “Sharing the stage with Lizzo at the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo highlights the extraordinary ability of our students to perform at the highest level while celebrating the rich musical legacy of Houston and Texas Southern.”

Known for its powerful sound, innovative arrangements, and electrifying performances, the Ocean of Soul marching band has long been a source of pride for Texas Southern University and a cultural ambassador for the institution.

The band’s performance with Lizzo added another milestone to its legacy, demonstrating its impact while celebrating a moment of hometown pride on one of Houston’s most iconic stages.
