From Uncertainty to Opportunity: How LeDrico McCullough Found His New Home at Texas Southern University

When LeDrico McCullough arrived at Texas Southern University, he carried more than just suitcases — he brought with him a story of faith, resilience, and rediscovery.

Originally from Spartanburg, South Carolina, LeDrico began his college career at Saint Augustine’s University in Raleigh, North Carolina. There, he served as Mister Freshman on the Royal Court — a leadership position that reflected his drive and charisma. But when Saint Augustine’s lost its accreditation during the spring semester of his freshman year, LeDrico’s path forward shifted.

“I was placed in a difficult situation where my academic future was uncertain,” he said. “Texas Southern offered a new school, a new city, and a new journey.”

Discovering a New Beginning

It was a mentor and former Royal Court advisor who first told him about Texas Southern University and the resource-rich city of Houston. Encouraged by stories of opportunity, he transferred to Texas Southern, stepping onto campus determined to start anew.

That determination was tested in his first week. His previous school had an enrollment of less than 1,000. Tigerland was new territory for him.

“Initially, the most challenging part of transferring was adjusting to the larger quantity of students,” he admitted. “I was overwhelmed at first.”

But Texas Southern’s community spirit quickly eased that transition. He found his footing through involvement and connection — becoming a Tiger Ambassador, giving tours to prospective students, and assisting with events across campus.

“This allowed me to learn the history of TSU and begin meeting my peers around campus,” he said.

His knack for visual storytelling helped him make a name for himself. Tigers quickly became accustomed to seeing LeDrico shooting photos and videos at campus events. His skills earned him national recognition. His digital coverage of Homecoming 2024 was featured by ESSENCE.

Immersed in the Texas Southern Experience

Today, in his second full academic year, LeDrico holds multiple leadership roles. His peers selected him to serve as Mister Junior, and he is the Lead Tiger Ambassador. He’s also an active member of Collegiate 100, The TSU Herald, and the TSU Film Club. His academic focus in Radio, Television, and Film, paired with a minor in Finance, reflects his ambition to tell stories that inspire and inform.

And though he came to Texas Southern as a transfer student, he quickly felt the warmth of belonging.

“Everyone at TSU showed me kindness instantly,” he said. “I do miss my friends from my previous school, but I’ve made plenty more in my new home.”

One of his most memorable early experiences came during the National Battle of the Bands, where he witnessed the Ocean of Soul perform.

“I was surprised by their talent,” he recalled. “Witnessing the excitement from SWAC fans blew me away.”

Guided by Mentorship

His success didn’t happen in isolation. He credits several mentors and staff members who supported his transition — Justin Lee, Professor Vincent Powell, Janelle Watts, and former Texas Southern staff member James Durant — all of whom played key roles in helping him navigate his new environment.

“They made my transition easier,” he said, smiling. “The ambassadors and staff were always there to guide me.”

Faith, Purpose, and Paying It Forward

For many transfer students, uncertainty can feel overwhelming. But LeDrico grounds his journey in faith, guided by a verse from the John 13:7:

“Jesus replied, ‘You do not realize now what I am doing, but later you will understand.’”

That scripture became his anchor during difficult times — a reminder that purpose often unfolds in ways we cannot immediately see.

“Transferring comes with a lot of uncertainty and anxiety,” he said. “However, you should trust in God’s plan because He will never steer you wrong.”

Now thriving in his Houston home, he encourages other transfer students to take that leap of faith.

“Texas Southern has changed my life for the best,” he said. “I believe anyone can come here, and this institution will build you into the best version of yourself.”

A Message to Future Tigers

His journey stands as a testament to the power of perseverance and the community that defines Texas Southern University. For students considering a transfer, his advice is simple: trust the process, get involved, and let TSU help you find your purpose.

“That’s why you should consider Texas Southern,” he said. “Because it will not only give you an education — it will give you a family.”
