Catholic Newman Center Hosts Welcome Back Mass with President Crawford

The Texas Southern University Catholic Newman Center opened the Fall 2025 semester with its annual Welcome Back Mass, bringing together students, faculty, staff, alumni, and friends of the University for worship, reflection, and fellowship.

The celebration, held at the Newman Center (3535 Wheeler Ave., behind the Towers Dormitory), featured Most Reverend Italo Dell’Oro, C.R.S., Auxiliary Bishop of Galveston-Houston, as celebrant. Texas Southern President James W. Crawford III joined the campus faith community for the special Mass.

Following the service, attendees enjoyed light bites and fellowship, strengthening the sense of community and belonging that the Newman Center seeks to foster on campus.

A Mission of Faith and Service

The TSU Catholic Newman Center exists exclusively for the University and welcomes all students, faculty, staff, and alumni. Its mission is to nurture both academic and spiritual growth by providing a safe, clean, and welcoming space where students can study, pray, and build friendships rooted in faith.

The Center is committed to walking alongside the Texas Southern community in the spirit of communion, encouraging students to live the social justice message of Jesus Christ, forming their Christian conscience, and accompanying them throughout their academic journey so they may become faithful leaders and devoted servants.

As the Newman Center emphasizes:

“Remain in my love, says the Lord; whoever lives in me and I in him will bear much fruit.” (John 15:9b, 5b)
