Texas Southern University President Highlights Human-Centered Approach to AI in Education at Ellucian Live 2025

As part of its ongoing partnership with Ellucian, Texas Southern University took center stage at Ellucian Live 2025, where President James W. Crawford III spoke about the promise of artificial intelligence in transforming student learning experiences.

During the session, President Crawford emphasized the importance of building AI systems around ethical principles and student outcomes.

“We build around that—these sorts of rule sets and ethical principles that enable us to utilize AI in a way that’s human centric,” he said.

Crawford outlined four key outcomes that artificial intelligence can help achieve when used thoughtfully in higher education:

  1. More personalized learning – By using data science to anticipate where students may encounter difficulties, educators can intervene earlier and more effectively.

  2. Immersive learning – Helping students grasp complex concepts through hands-on, interactive experiences.

  3. Increased student engagement – Enabling more dynamic and interactive faculty-student learning.

  4. Cost-effective learning – Freeing up faculty time through AI tools, allowing for more focus on student mentorship and support.

“AI enables our faculty to be more efficient… and then they can use that time to mentor their students,” Crawford explained.

The remarks were delivered as part of Ellucian Live 2025, a global event bringing together higher education leaders to discuss innovation, student success, and technology.

Texas Southern University’s partnership with Ellucian reflects its commitment to digital transformation, access to opportunity, and preparing students to thrive in a data-driven world.
