Tigers in Action: Students, Alumni Bring Holiday Meals to Third Ward
On November 23, Texas Southern University students, alumni, and campus leaders united to support families in Houston’s Third Ward through this year’s Tiger Turkey Meal Drive. The event was a collaboration between the University Program Council (UPC), the Student Government Association (SGA), and the Texas Southern University National Alumni Association.
The initiative was led by Miss UPC Zion Alexi, SGA External Affairs Senator Taylor Zanders, and alumni partners. Together, volunteers gathered bags filled with turkeys and holiday fixings, serving more than 200 families in the Cuney Homes community. For households unable to travel to the pickup location, students delivered meals directly to their doors.
For many volunteers, the effort represented more than a seasonal tradition; it reflected Texas Southern University’s commitment to giving back to the community that surrounds it.
As volunteer Zion Roberson shared, the impact comes from “the fact that they know that Texas Southern University pours back to them, because Third Ward takes care of us.” Another volunteer added, “Texas Southern University is here, we care for you all.”
Support from alumni donors made the drive possible, while student volunteers from organizations across campus helped bring the project to life. Texas Southern expressed its appreciation for everyone who donated, volunteered, and shared in the effort.
