Texas Southern University’s Ocean of Soul Shines at 2025 Pepsi National Battle of the Bands

The thunderous sound of Texas Southern University’s Ocean of Soul marching band electrified NRG Stadium during the 2025 Pepsi National Battle of the Bands, showcasing the essence of HBCU band culture and Houston pride.
The annual event is more than a performance, it’s a celebration of Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs), honoring their cultural impact through music, dance, and tradition.

Local Pride on a National Stage
Dressed in maroon and gray, the Ocean of Soul brought unmatched energy to the field. The band’s intricate formations, high-stepping drum majors, and powerful brass resonated throughout the stadium, earning thunderous applause from the crowd.
Head Drum Major Kamron Hadnot emphasized the importance of the event beyond music:
“Events like this allow HBCU culture to be seen in a more positive light than how it’s sometimes portrayed. It brings us together as a community—to put on a great show,” Hadnot told Click2Houston.
Honoring Legacy and Tradition
While Texas Southern University carried Houston’s banner, seven other HBCU marching bands also performed, each continuing a decades-long tradition of inspiring pride through musical excellence.
The Battle of the Bands also serves a greater purpose: raising scholarship funds for students. For example, Jackson State University received $50,000 in scholarships this year, providing essential financial relief to students facing challenges.
More Than Music
The 2025 Pepsi National Battle of the Bands highlighted the resilience and cultural richness of HBCUs, with Texas Southern University’s Ocean of Soul standing out as a source of local pride and community celebration.
