
Texas Southern University Welcomes New Interim Dean to Lead School of Communication
Texas Southern University has appointed Dr. Alan K. Caldwell as the Interim Dean of the School of Communication. With more than two decades of experience in communications, media, and public relations, Dr. Caldwell brings a blend of academic, corporate, and global expertise to this leadership role.
The university announced that Dr. Caldwell’s appointment is focused on advancing the School of Communication by enhancing academic quality and preparing students for success in a rapidly evolving communications landscape. His goals include increasing both graduate and undergraduate enrollment, highlighting the school’s unique offerings, and leveraging innovative technologies to improve educational delivery.
Dr. Caldwell also aims to expand student access to real-world experiences through partnerships with global organizations, seeking opportunities designed to help students develop strong portfolios and gain valuable professional exposure.

Dr. Caldwell is an internationally recognized expert in the field of communication and public relations, and the recipient of two global industry awards. His professional portfolio includes leading communications for Fortune 100 and 200 companies, where he contributed high-level strategy and executive insight on major media.
In addition to his corporate background, Dr. Caldwell has served as a faculty member in strategic and crisis communications at institutions including Pepperdine University, Mount Saint Mary’s University, and the University of California, Los Angeles. His international experience and cross-cultural perspective are expected to broaden students’ understanding of global communication practices.
Dr. Caldwell also brings a strong record of service in higher education. He previously served as a strategic communication advisor to executive leadership and the Board of Regents at Morehouse College in Atlanta, Georgia. He also held the role of Vice-Chair of the Cal State Dominguez Hills University Foundation in Carson, California, an organization that primarily supports minority students.

Dr. Caldwell holds a dual Ph.D. in Global Leadership and Change Management from Pepperdine University, an MBA from Mount Saint Mary’s University, and a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science from Baylor University. He also earned a Certificate in Public Relations and Communications from the University of California, Los Angeles, and is an Accredited Public Relations Professional (APR).
