Texas Southern University Mourns the Passing of Dr. Roderick “Rod” Paige, Trailblazing Educator and Cherished Leader

Texas Southern University mourns the passing of Dr. Roderick “Rod” Paige, a towering figure in American education and a dedicated member of the Texas Southern family whose service helped shape generations of students, educators, and leaders.

Dr. Paige’s legacy at Texas Southern University is both deep and enduring. He served the  University as head football coach (1971–1975), Athletic Director (1975–1980), a faculty member (1980–1984), and as Dean of the College of Education (1984–1994). Through each role, he advanced student opportunity, strengthened the University’s academic foundation, and championed excellence across campus.

To honor his legacy, the building that houses the College of Education he led for 10 years is named in his honor. His connection to the University continued throughout the decades after his departure. He established the Rod Paige Endowment to support the educational pursuits of Texas Southern University students.

“Dr. Rod Paige represented the very best of Texas Southern University—courageous leadership, unshakable belief in the promise of education, and a lifelong commitment to lifting others,” said Texas Southern University President J.W. Crawford III. “His impact is inextricably woven into the fabric of this institution and the lives of countless people who benefited from his guidance, vision, and service. We extend our heartfelt condolences to his family and all who mourn this tremendous loss.”

Beyond Texas Southern, Dr. Paige became nationally recognized for his transformative public service, including leadership in K–12 education and his historic appointment as the 7th U.S. Secretary of Education and first African-American (2001–2005).

Texas Southern University Board of Regents Chairman James Benham reflected on Dr. Paige’s life and legacy.

“Today, Texas Southern University mourns the passing of a coach, a dean, a mentor, and a national leader whose impact can be felt in classrooms and communities across the country. We also celebrate a life well-lived, defined by public service, courageous leadership, and a steadfast dedication to improving the lives of others.”

Dr. Paige was inducted into the Texas Southern University Sports Hall of Fame in 2024.
