Texas Southern University Crowns Sherrell Ross as 2025 Miss Homecoming

Texas Southern University has crowned alumna Sherrell Ross as its 2025 Miss Homecoming, celebrating a woman whose journey reflects the resilience and pride of the Tiger community.

Overcoming Adversity

A native of Missouri City, Texas, Ross chose Texas Southern because it was close to home and she had relatives who were already attending. But a near-fatal car accident two months before she was set to begin nearly derailed her plans.

“Between depression and fear, I wasn’t interested in starting school or even leaving my house,” she recalled. “My parents worked with me day in and day out to make sure I was mentally stable to not only drive to and from school, but also physically able to navigate walking the campus itself.”

Ross changed her major late in her studies, but was able to finish on time with her peers by taking extra classes and summer courses.

Academic Excellence

Ross is a three-time graduate of Texas Southern. She earned her Bachelor of Science in Political Science in 2016, a Master’s in Public Administration in 2018, and a Master of Business Administration in 2021. She is currently pursuing her doctorate in education for mental health and human studies.

“One year from now, you’ll be able to address me as Dr. Sherrell Ross,” she said.

Campus Life and Leadership

While at Texas Southern, Ross served on the University Program Council, performed as Lex the Tiger during 2014–2015 academic year, and worked as a graduate assistant in the School of Public Affairs.

One of her most meaningful memories was performing a mime dance to Donnie McClurkin’s “Stand” at a campus talent show, which earned her a standing ovation.

“I was able to spread God’s message and hopefully bring someone closer to Christ that day,” she reflected.

A Career in Service

Ross has used all three of her Texas Southern degrees to build a career centered on service and leadership. She worked for Representative Senfronia Thompson during the 86th Legislative Session, later became a parole officer with the Texas Department of Criminal Justice, and now serves as an asylum officer with the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. She also teaches mime to youth at her church and is active with the Lambda Zeta Chapter of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Incorporated.

Honored to Represent Texas Southern Alumni

For Ross, being crowned Miss Homecoming is a source of deep pride.

“I am honored. I didn’t know what to expect with the title, but I am excited for this week’s homecoming events. I am always repping my school no matter where I am, so this title is perfect for me.”

She is the Vice President for the Barbara Jordan-Mickey Leland School of Public Affairs alumni chapter, and a member of the Jesse H. Jones School of Business alumni chapter.

Advice for Future Tigers

Ross encourages current and future Tigers to embrace every moment.

“Your time in college is going to be some of the best years of your life. Make as many connections as you can, network, get involved, but most of all, live in the moment. Don’t be in such a rush to get to the next stage in your life. Before you know it, you will blink and your time at TSU will be over.”

A Lasting Legacy

Sherrell Ross’s story—marked by perseverance, scholarship, and service—shows the enduring strength of Texas Southern University graduates. As she carries the crown of Miss Homecoming, she continues to embody Tiger pride and inspire others to maximize their own journeys.
