Texas Southern University Baseball Wraps Up Season in Birmingham

The Texas Southern University Tigers closed out their season on Thursday morning with a hard-fought battle at historic Rickwood Field, ultimately falling to Jackson State, 12–6.

Texas Southern University struck first with a run in the opening inning, but Jackson State quickly responded and built a 7–1 lead heading into the eighth. Just when the game seemed out of reach, the Tigers mounted an impressive comeback.

With two outs and the pressure on, Texas Southern University came alive. A dropped ball brought in two runs, followed by a clutch hit from Evan Joubert to narrow the gap. Bryce Hughes then delivered a two-run single to make it a one-run game, electrifying the Texas Southern University bench and fans in attendance.

But momentum shifted again as Jackson State answered with a five-run burst in the bottom of the eighth, putting the game out of reach. Texas Southern University kept fighting, but the rally came up short.

Hughes finished the day with two hits and two RBIs, while Justin Mayes held it down on the mound through six innings.

Though the season ends in Birmingham, the Tigers showed heart, resilience, and the kind of grit that builds strong seasons to come.
