Texas Southern Delivers Dominant 51–7 Victory Over Arkansas-Pine Bluff

Texas Southern University put together its most complete performance of the season Saturday night, securing an outstanding 51–7 win over Arkansas-Pine Bluff at Husky Stadium in Houston.

Originally scheduled for Shell Energy Stadium, the game was relocated to Houston Christian University due to a scheduling conflict. That didn’t stop Texas Southern from setting the tone early.

After a scoreless opening drive by both teams, the Tigers took a 3–0 lead with a short field goal from Christian Avelar. From there, Texas Southern found its rhythm. Quarterback KJ Cooper threw two touchdown passes to Roriyon Richardson—one from 7 yards and another from 11—to stretch the lead to 17–0 midway through the second quarter.

Texas Southern’s defense stayed locked in, while the special teams unit made a statement of its own. Donovan Jones recovered a fumble on the second-half kickoff and returned it 18 yards for a touchdown, extending the lead to 34–0. By the end of the third quarter, the Tigers were up 44–0 and in full control of the field.

Running backs Athean Renfro and Jacob Washington led a punishing ground game, with Renfro rushing for 133 yards on 22 carries. Cooper finished 16-for-23 for 197 yards, two touchdowns, and one interception. Texas Southern totaled 557 yards of offense, including 350 on the ground.

The Ocean of Soul, Texas Southern’s renowned marching band, kept the energy high throughout the night, cheering on the Tigers as they dominated the field. Jordan Davis added a late 42-yard rushing touchdown to cap off the scoring.

Now Texas Southern looks to keep the momentum going as it hits the road to face Grambling State on Saturday, October 11, at 6 p.m. inside Eddie G. Robinson Memorial Stadium.
