
Texas Southern Battles in SWAC Opener, Earns First Conference Win
Texas Southern University women’s soccer opened SWAC play with back-to-back road games this weekend, falling to Jackson State on Friday, October 3, before bouncing back with a 1–0 win over Southern University on Sunday afternoon, October 5, in Baton Rouge.
Friday: Jackson State 2, Texas Southern 0
In Friday’s opener at the Jackson State Soccer Complex, Texas Southern held Jackson State scoreless through the first half, thanks to the Lady Tigers’ defensive efforts and four saves from goalkeeper Alessandra Bastidas.
Texas Southern University finished with nine shots and earned two corner kicks, but couldn’t find the back of the net. Jackson State University broke through in the 63rd minute and added a second goal four minutes later to secure the 2–0 result.
Sunday: Texas Southern 1, Southern 0
Two days later, Texas Southern University bounced back with a victory over Southern University on Sunday afternoon, October 5, in Baton Rouge. Forward Kamara Bradley scored the game-winner in the 75th minute, lifting the Lady Tigers to a 1–0 victory at A.W. Mumford Stadium.
Texas Southern controlled the rhythm throughout the match, outshooting Southern University 19–6 and putting nine shots on goal. Goalkeeper Alicia Audu earned her first win of the season in goal, recording three saves in the shutout.
The win marks Texas Southern University’s first conference victory of the season, moving the team to 1–1 in SWAC play.
The Lady Tigers continue their road trip on Friday, October 10, as they travel to Huntsville, Alabama, to face Alabama A&M University. Kickoff is set for 11 a.m.
