Fuel the Frequency: Keep KTSU’s Voice Loud and Proud

For more than 53 years, KTSU 90.9 FM has been a powerful voice for the culture, the campus, and the community. From the heart of Texas Southern University, The Choice has delivered the music that moves us, the news that informs us, and the stories that reflect who we are. It’s been a home for jazz, blues, hip-hop, and local voices, amplifying what matters most to Houston and beyond.
And now, as KTSU faces new challenges, that same community spirit is rising up to meet the moment.
A proud TSU alum and longtime listener recently pledged their support, calling on others to join them. Their message was simple and powerful: KTSU has always been there for us, now it’s our turn to be there for KTSU.
Due to a recent vote in Congress, over $1 billion in federal funding for public broadcasting is being cut, including grants to HBCU radio stations like KTSU. That means the $203,000 in funding KTSU received last year to help cover its $2 million annual budget could disappear this October.
KTSU has always done more with less. With dedicated staff, passionate listeners, and deep community roots, the station continues to thrive because people believe in its mission. As General Manager Ernest Walker put it, “We’re already working on a shoestring budget,” but that hasn’t stopped KTSU from broadcasting excellence day after day.
