Milestone Moment: KTSU 90.9 FM Breaks into Top 20 in Houston-Galveston Radio Market
KTSU 90.9FM, “The Choice,” a proud part of Texas Southern University, has reached a historic benchmark, earning a place among the Top 20 radio stations in the Houston-Galveston market, according to the latest Nielsen Audio PPM data as reported by the Radio Research Consortium (RRC).
The achievement places KTSU among the leading stations in one of the most competitive media markets in the nation. The Houston-Galveston market ranks as the #6 radio market in the United States, reaching more than 6 million listeners and featuring over 60 commercial and non-commercial radio signals across a wide range of formats.
“This is a defining moment for KTSU and for public radio in Houston,” said Ernest Walker, General Manager of KTSU 90.9FM. “To be recognized alongside major commercial broadcasters speaks to the strength of our programming, the dedication of our team, and the deep connection we have with our community. This is what it looks like when culture, purpose, and strategy align.”
KTSU’s rise reflects continued growth in audience reach, engagement, and cultural relevance—driven by a unique blend of music discovery, culturally responsive programming, and community-centered storytelling. As a public radio station, KTSU operates with a mission-first approach while competing in a commercial-heavy environment, making this milestone especially significant.
The station’s performance also highlights the impact of its dual-platform strategy, including its flagship 90.9FM broadcast and its HD2 channel, “The Vibe,” which targets emerging and younger audiences through urban alternative programming.
“This milestone reinforces the role of public media as a powerful and competitive force in today’s audio landscape,” Walker added. “We are not just serving our audience—we are growing it, elevating it, and expanding the reach of culturally relevant content across Houston and beyond.”
As KTSU approaches its 55th anniversary, the station continues to expand its footprint through digital streaming, community engagement initiatives, and experiential learning opportunities designed to prepare the next generation of media professionals.
